Three-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen has voiced his wish to see the historic Mugello circuit make a comeback to the Grand Prix racing calendar.
Situated in the Tuscan countryside of Italy, this Italian venue holds a special place in the hearts of motorsport enthusiasts. Known for its high-speed straights, tight corners, and undulating terrain, it's a track that favours bravery and precision.
While the circuit has long been a fixture in MotoGP racing, it made a sudden appearance in Formula 1's limited schedule in 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation. The Tuscan Grand Prix took place there, with Lewis Hamilton emerging as the victor while Verstappen, unfortunately, retired after a startline collision on the opening lap.
Nevertheless, the Red Bull driver, a strong proponent of more traditional and enduring circuits, holds fond memories of this old-school, picturesque venue. Mugello challenges drivers with its thrilling and demanding layout, promising fans an unforgettable spectacle.
“For me, Mugello,” Verstappen said on the Talking Bull podcast when asked to name a race he would add to F1’s calendar.
“[Because of the] track layout. There are so many fast corners and in an F1 car, it’s so nice.”
In 2024, Verstappen aims to clinch his fourth consecutive F1 world championship. With Red Bull’s technical edge over rivals, the likelihood of the 25-year-old realizing his ambition remains high.
Yet, the 54-time Grand Prix victor is aware that each new season can bring unforeseen challenges.
“Every year is a little bit different,” he said. “That also depends, of course, how good the car is going to be. But I think you also just rely a lot on your experience."
“I mean, you've experienced already a lot in your career and in F1 and you know that if you want to fight for a championship, the most important thing is the car."
“But besides that, your performances need to be very consistent and that's something that you have to try and achieve again."
“Every single year it's a new challenge, to try and do that.”
